Dr. Kyle Grice begins term as new CCO President
CCO sat down with the incoming President to learn more about his 28 years in chiropractic and his approach to Council leadership
CCO: It seems you were destined to become a chiropractor. When did your relationship with chiropractic begin?
Dr. Kyle Grice: My father Adrian Grice was a unique figure in chiropractic who started in 1959, and developed many important chiropractic techniques. He was prolific in writing and publishing studies internationally, and taught at CMCC for several decades. I knew I wanted to deliver to others the same kind of care I had received growing up. It’s a very unique way to look at health and disease.
CCO: It’s still very much a family affair.
Dr. Kyle Grice: Yes, I co-own and operate Grice Chiropractic in Toronto with my sister, Dr. Leslie Grice. My brother, Dr. Kevin Grice, owns and operates Grice Chiropractic in Newmarket. We’re a two generation chiropractic family, and my father continues to interact with leaders in the chiropractic community.
CCO: How would you describe your current practice and areas of interest?
Dr. Kyle Grice: I’m pleased that we’ve developed an interdisciplinary team to meet our patients’ needs. In addition to chiropractic, we have in-house physiotherapy, massage therapy, acupuncture, naturopathic and psychotherapy. It’s a true shared care team approach. For me personally, I am focused on the treatment of spinal deformities. I am advanced certified in Chiropractic BioPhysics and do scoliosis bracing and rehabilitation using ScolioBrace.
CCO: What prompted you to become involved in the regulation of the profession?
Dr. Kyle Grice: Initially, joining CCO was not an aspiration of mine. But I was asked by some people who I respected to run for Council, and I decided I would be happy to serve the public and the profession in this way. I joined Council in 2021, and have sat on the Registration, Patient Relations, Quality Assurance and now Executive committees.
CCO: How do envision your term as President over the next two years?
Dr. Kyle Grice: To be honest, I think things are going well right now. I believe the best thing we can do is stay the course. We have a really good group of public and elected members who work together well. One of the things I’ve learned over the last four years on Council is there are many trusted people at CCO that can be relied on for advice. That is equally true of staff and the senior leadership. I believe we owe a lot of our success as a regulator to them.
CCO: Are there any particular areas of focus for you?
Dr. Kyle Grice: Yes. When I was on the Quality Assurance committee we were looking at things like click-through and open rates on CCO communications to members, to figure out how, when communications outlining changes to standards or guidelines occur, we can best ensure that they are being received and incorporated. We need to improve on this. We’ve come a long way from when I started in 1997 when we would get a letter from the College via snail mail, and then place the update in a binder. We need to do more work on managing the transition to the digital realm effectively.
CCO: Enhancing member communications and engagement is one of the College’s strategic objectives.
Dr. Kyle Grice: Yes. I thought the last strategic planning session we held was excellent, especially in its emphasis on collaboration, interaction and feedback. That process of collaboration is super important to me, and I plan to continue that kind of collaboration with Council and staff, in terms of identifying how to meet all our strategic objectives. We also need to think about collaboration in a broader sense, across other Colleges and health system partners.
CCO: Are there any emerging trends in regulation to be aware of?
Dr. Kyle Grice: I’m interested in how AI can be utilized – If it can be utilized – to enhance our overall effectiveness or create efficiency in regulation. I’m not one to shy away from experimentation with the use of tools which may prove to have value. It’s something we’ve only discussed briefly, but is certainly an area of interest.
CCO: What is next up on the calendar?
Dr. Kyle Grice: I’m looking forward to the next meeting of the Executive on May 23, which will be my first to chair as President. And then we have the AGM in June, and toward the end of summer the next strategic planning meeting. So definitely hitting the ground running.
CCO: Now that you are President, will you be roping in your brother and sister to one-day run for Council?
Dr. Kyle Grice: Ha. No, that’s not really their flavour. I guess I’m just a little different from them! You never know what the future holds though!
