As per the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991, CCO has a statutory Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee whose mandate is to review, investigate and make decisions on complaints and reports filed with the College.
CCO protects the public interest by ensuring chiropractors are complying with all standards, guidelines and policies that apply to the practice of chiropractic in the province.
Individuals may raise a complaint against a chiropractor in Ontario for a variety of reasons, including:
- Boundaries and sexual abuse
- Delegating care
- Performing controlled acts and other restricted activities
- Failing to seek consent for treatment
- Misinformation or lack of information regarding treatment
- Providing unnecessary or excessive treatment
- Incompetent practice causing harm
- Discontinuing needed care without arranging for alternative services
- Fees, billing
- Improper record keeping
- Failing to advise a patient to consult another health care professional when the practitioner knows the patient’s condition is beyond his/her scope of practice or competence
- False or misleading advertising
- Failing to practise in accordance with CCO standards of practice, policies and guidelines
