Peer & Practice Assessment 2.0

Background Information

Building on the success of PPA 1.0, CCO’s Quality Assurance Committee has developed a revised version of the Peer and Practice Assessment program known as PPA 2.0.

Note that the PPA 1.0 program continues, assessing and assisting new members entering practice for the first time, or members returning to practice after an absence of more than two years , or as directed by a decision of the Discipline Committee.

  1. Member is randomly selected or volunteers to participate in peer and practise assessment process
  2. Information exchanged between member and peer assessor, including patient file(s)
  3. Member and peer assessor meet to review member’s practice including files and overall knowledge and compliance with CCO standards of practice, policies and guidelines
  4. Disposition Report provided to member identifying any potential areas of improvement (approximately 3 – 4 months after the assessment)
  5. Member and Peer Assessor feedback reviewed by the Quality Assurance Committee

Peer and Practice Assessment 2.0

Similar to PPA 1.0, this revised assessment program is:

  • Mandatory for all members registered in the General class
  • An in-person interaction with a trained CCO Peer Assessor
  • An opportunity to improve your compliance with CCO regulations, standards of practice, policies, and guidelines
  • Confidential
  • A valuable continuing education opportunity

What’s involved in PPA 2.0?

  • A more in-depth, conversational review of a selection of patient files to better ensure  members are maintaining an accurate patient health record reflective of the patient encounter and “story”
  • A review and conversation related to scenarios commonly encountered in clinical practice that demonstrates adherence to  regulations, standards of practice, policies and guidelines
  • A more complete review of the member’s professional portfolio to ensure that all components, especially the Self-Assessment Plan of Action, are being addressed

Member Selection

Each year, several CCO members in the General class of registration are selected to undergo PPA 2.0. Selected members are notified by letter, and asked to submit specific practice material which is then forwarded to an assigned peer assessor.  The assessor will contact the member to arrange a convenient time to conduct the assessment. Following the assessment, CCO staff, under the direction of the QA Committee, will review the assessment report and provide the member with a disposition, including recommendations for improvements if appropriate.

What You Can Do Now…

  1. Familiarize yourself with all PPA 2.0 materials.
  2. Volunteer to undergo PPA 2.0 to get a head start on making improvements in your professional practice.
  3. Continue to wait until you are selected to participate in PPA 2.0, then follow the instructions provided.
