Peer & Practice Assessment 1.0

Background Information & Legislative Context

CCO’s Quality Assurance (QA) Committee developed the Peer & Practice Assessment Program to enhance members’ learning opportunities and ensure their compliance with regulations, standards of practice, policies and guidelines.

It is in the public interest that chiropractors who demonstrated entry-level competencies when they first registered with CCO, continue to be competent for as long as they are in practice. The public reasonably expects a consistent chiropractic experience, such as the taking of a thorough history, pertinent examination, diagnosis/clinical impression, plan of care, and outcome evaluations.

  1. Member is randomly selected or volunteers to participate in peer and practise assessment process
  2. Information exchanged between member and peer assessor, including patient file(s)
  3. Member and peer assessor meet to review member’s practice including files and overall knowledge and compliance with CCO standards of practice, policies and guidelines
  4. Disposition Report provided to member identifying any potential areas of improvement (approximately 3 – 4 months after the assessment)
  5. Member and Peer Assessor feedback reviewed by the Quality Assurance Committee

Participation is Mandatory

Members who hold a General (i.e., Active) Certificate of Registration are required to participate in this program.

If a member is registered as General and is actively seeing patients, the assessment will entail a review of 10 current patient files and also of the member’s knowledge of CCO regulations, standards of practice, policies and guidelines. If a member is registered as General but not actively seeing patients, the member will undergo a modified assessment.

Member Selection

CCO selects and matches members with an assessor from their electoral district. A colleague who is trained to identify areas of improvement and encourage professional development will conduct the assessment. Peer and Practice Assessment is designed to be educational, not punitive.

If you have any concerns and/or conflict with the assigned assessor, you may contact CCO to request another peer assessor.

If you have been selected to participate in the Peer & Practice Assessment Program, please do the following:

  1. Review the Peer & Practice Assessment Program Handbook
  2. Email or mail the following items to CCO within 15 days of receiving the assessment notification:
  • Pre-visit questionnaire
  • One current patient file (name/other identifying information removed)
  • Blank sample of clinical charts/forms
  • List of abbreviations and short forms used (if any)

Your completed materials will be forwarded to the assigned assessor who will contact you (telephone or e-mail) to arrange a mutually convenient time to conduct the assessment. Please note the assessment may not occur right away, and does not have to occur during office hours.
